sorted no.2

When I was, ooh, probably a teenager, I vividly remember my mother saying to my sister & I that we were to tell her if she was turning in to her mother.
And then I remember that when we did tell her, that she wasn't very happy with either of us.

And now the worm has turned.
I have become my mother.
Without warning I suddenly hear myself saying exactly what she would say.
(Brunnell especially thinks it's frightening.)

One of Mum's many mantras...  (and she still says it)
'don't put down, put away'.
It used to drive us crazy.
Except now, I hear that self same saying coming from me.
'don't put down, put away'.

When everyone ignores me, I resort to, wait for it, Virgo's unite - my etc drawers.
Old steel filing drawers in a past life.
Oh yes, you can snigger, but these little drawers are the answer to the don't put down put away.
They keep my Virgo intolerance of mess, tolerant.
You see, there are three 'etc' drawers.
One for Milly, one for Eva, and one for everything else (mostly Brunnell).
Anything that gets dumped anywhere that it's not meant to be dumped goes in to the etc drawers.
And if you have kids, then you know that this could be anything and everything and all at the same time!
Once a week I threaten that anything left in the etc drawer really will be dumped, although I confess I've never actually gone through with this promise.
I love these little drawers because though not put away, they satisfy the don't put down part of the equation, and the family love them, because they can usually find their stuff without having to look too hard.

Happy wife, happy life.

  1. I am not certain as where I get it from but one of my not so fave sayings, but so often I use it that it could be mistaken as such is, "stop behaving like a pork chop". When it leaves my lips, it's like "what the?". How does a pork chop act?

I remember when I became my mother--it was disturbing. Still is. :)

  4. Ah, my fellow Virgo, I'm smiling in Hobart! Just this week I taught Miss India 'A place for everything and everything in its place'. I only said it once. She now repeats it to me every day. And to Mr PB, much to my amusement! J x

  6. Put it away dont put it down, is of course the ideal option, however I have another gripe which relates to HOW people put things down. Are you a Spreader, or a Stacker. I myself am a stacker, gathering things into a nice little pile ready to put away. Vincent is a Spreader! OMG its everywhere, instead of placing his cycle gear in a neat pile ready for an early morning start, its spread all over, taking up maximum space. I am definately becoming my Dad, oh yes, thats correct, he was the tidy parent in my familly.

  7. Oh, I can so relate! I feel like I spend most of my life tidying up after my three girls and husband. But what has saved me is a fabulous set of old lockers that previously belonged to a golf club. There is a double locker for all four of them - perfect for school bags, shoes, sports equipment, books and general junk. Anything I find lying around goes in the appropriate locker, and then it's up to the owner to find a home for it. x

  8. I am so terrible at putting things away, but I am excellent at putting things into piles. It drives Lyndon NUTS! I just love your drawers! I have done a similar thing with boxes, but they weren't nearly as nice as yours :)

  9. I am a Virgo. And I am SUPER MESSY. I have always been. I'm crazy about cleaning, I'm always cleaning, but I do that around piles of stuff. In my defense I can say that I have many hobbies, many different things i use for my work, a very little house and very little storage space/furniture. But I know it won't change when i'll buy more storage, it will just be a little better...

  10. Oh that is too funny! I have become (to my astonishment) exactly like my dear mother. I do like your etc drawers - living with three boys I could certainly put etc drawers to use!
