domestic bliss

We're back home.
You may remember this post from two weeks ago, when it seemed to be almost an impossible feat to achieve.
Well, lets just say that the living is not entirely easy, but here we are.
We scrubbed our neighbours house from top to toe, and then came across the fence to do the same here, although it was a little depressing to say the least.
Headquarters is the laundry.
A temporary setup in a temporary space.
But you can see we have our priorities right - the coffee machine, and two wine glasses.
So far they're the only glasses we can find. I think it must be a sign. Brunnel & I were damn quick to fill them. Even if it was 10 o'clock on a Monday night.
It's not that I've become a lush, but boy, it sure is tempting!
The sink is our 'running water', and the electrician has rigged up a light.
The electric barbeque came out of retirement for all of 15 minutes. Sadly, on its first test run it decided to blow up. We have yet to entirely solve this little problem.
Although a chicken sandwich for dinner every night is probably not going to be the answer.
You see it will still be at least 6 weeks before we have any sign of a kitchen. It seems that our joiner decided to try skateboarding. The result was a broken leg in two places, and no kitchen or bathroom joinery for us.
On the positive side, we do have a toilet, and a shower.
And with our new electric blankets, and a heater borrowed from our neighbours, in some strange way, it is quite nice to be back in our own beds!

  1. Gosh, you are going it tough! At least you have a toilet :)
What was your joiner thinking? Here's hoping the next six weeks of sandwich dinners go quickly for you all :)

  2. Six weeks is a long time. It took about 3 weeks for our kitchen to be done and I tell you it seemed like an eternity. Salad, toast and rice (from the rice cooker) wore a bit thin. Your first meal in your new kitchen will be the best meal you will ever taste. xx

  3. A skateboarding joiner - only in Wellington could this be a reality...Good luck!

  4. I love a woman with a healthy attitude to the real priorities! And NZ has such good wine :) I do hope things go smoothly from here on in. It will be so worth it.

  7. Amanda, you are a brave, brave woman, and I hope you get ample use of those wine glasses, and eat out, and stay with friends, and check out fancy hotels. May it all be over soon and may you be amply recompensed in stylish comfort.

  8. wow, I have been cooking from our laundry since March while our new kitchen is being built. I have pangs of envy about how pretty your laundry/kitchen is compared to mine! wanna trade photos?

  10. I noticed you still have a beautiful bouquet even though you're shacked up in the laundry. Talk about a Kiwi attitude of making the best of things. What an inspiration. OF course - you could fly the family over here for the next six weeks and we can look after you. You would still get the wine but wouldn't need an electric blanket… If you arrange the flowers from my garden nicely in my old mason jars, I'll even do the cleaning ;-)

  11. A warm welcome home (of sorts) - somehow there's nothing like your own bed....even if you're glamping in a half-done house.

  12. I so admire you doing this when you have kids. The 'worst' house we ever lived in was so bad we literally camped in it for 4 months. We used to eat out every Sunday evening and ask for extra veg so we could get some Vit C into us as our diet of sandwiches etc was so bad! And that was just the 2 of us.
I rem having to pee in a bucket one morning as the bathroom floor had been put down the night before and the loo couldn't be put back in quite yet (we were doing most of the work ourselves).
Thinking of you and I'm sure it will all be worth it - enjoy the wine ;)
