serial tendencies

Are you a serial hoarder?
Oh please tell me you are.
Maybe hoarder is too harsh a word. Collector sounds much nicer.
Are you a serial collector? As in, "Hi, my name is Amanda and I am a serial collector."
"And what is it that you collect Amanda?"
"Oh, this and that, small things, interesting things, I'm-not-really-sure-what-they-are things (cue Japanese stampy things in image above), old things, I can't help myself things, and other general paraphenalia, generally described by my husband as 'junk'."
"But also old bread knives, railway china, old kitchenware, Carltonware, bottles, old signs and anything with a font on it, fabric, design books, magazines, tins, shoes, practically anything handmade, but especially beautiful hand made ceramics, dahlias, jugs, Crown Lynn mixing bowls, old teaspoons, old china, chairs, indian printing stamps, old pharmacy ephemera, cards....don't forget the general paraphenalia etc etc etc, and lately something of a predilection for light fittings & old filing cabinets."
It is only when one has to pack most of her collections up, albeit for a short time, that one wonders if she has a little problem?

What do you think?

  1. If you're the one who has to pack it up and are fine with it, then you have no problem at all. When other people have to pack it up for you, like a husband, that's when it's a problem.

  2. um hello my name is Janine and I am a serial hoarder oops collector. After moving house two weeks ago and unpacking boxes that had been in storage since Feb, it has come to light that I am a serial collector.

I unpacked more boxes tonight and realised I collect children's books from my own childhood such as "The Tiger who came to Tea", Trixie Belden books, Pippi Longstocking, "The Silver Sword" to name a few.

Turns out I also collect unmatched china trios I seem to have 23 sets now. Which is great when I have tea parties.

Um I collect vintage aprons and table linen all of which is used.

Then there are the house books such as Modern Vintage that I bought from your store and um Flea market Style...

I wonder if there is a support group??

  3. Hi Amanda - definitely a serial horder - although moving to another country 4 years ago helped me purge- trying to be better about it now- but the things I horde most are magazines and newspaper clippings - little ideas for my blog- a beautiful picture, a new business, so hard to get rid of but also hard to find the best way to keep and store for the future!!

  4. Yes I'm a reformed collector, I had to get rid of lots and lots of really cool things as we won't have any room when we move onto a boat!

  5. Maybe think of it as curating rather than collecting, and you'll feel better about it? I have a constant inner struggle between my hoarder and my minimalist - both are frequently bruised.

  8. I now have a new obsession to seek out and add to my collectibles, while staying with my sister recently she showed me her collection of Hatpins!!! They are so gorgeous, and must have looked quite amazing, and quirky attached to ones hat. Once again the memories recalled add to the delights of the items we collect.

  9. i think your little *problem* is perfectly normal....needed....delightful and what any sane person with a gathering tendency would do darling Amanda...
if you need me to fly over to help you source any of those listed items, for hours on end, and the search involves many old shops and flea markets and coffees...well i'm in....i think we'd have a totally gorgeous day!

  10. Ah hah - I knew there was a name for it. Having just yesterday taken delivery of a container load of our belongings which we'd had in storage I must say I have been rather alarmed by the amount of...err...small-interesting-things I seem to own. Alarmed to the point of being a bit scared of opening any more boxes...

  11. Ah, Amanda, you funny girl. I grew up with a mother who never threw anything away so I did acquire that tendency. But it's all a matter of degree, isn't it? And I like Miss Melissa's suggestion, too. J x
