Amongst my chair fetishes are many design classics. But sometimes the simplicity and honesty of an old chair is the best kind of chair. No provenance as such, no recognised designer, but a long, and possibly accomplished history. Possibly not. Definitely a full life. Several coats of paint, mostly worn off. A replaced arm. Many chips. Evidence of bora. Heavy, solid and dependable.
I'm sure many would have consigned this chair to the tip long ago. Rescued instead, it sits in semi-retirement in our family room.
Many years of life in the old chap yet.
Do you have a favourite upcycled piece?

ReplyDeleteYou just can't beat a scrubbly old chair. I would buy this over new anyday.
ReplyDeleteJust popped onto your lovely blog through sweet Tina. I love your chair. It could fit everywhere! We can never have enough of this kind of sweet chairs, can we? Have a happy rest of your weekend!
ReplyDeleteYes, I like old chairs too, in fact I have been thinking I must adopt one for my as-yet-unfinshed studio/art room. Tip shop here I come!
ReplyDeleteYour's looks great in his pozy.
I like chairs like this - always usefeul, not too precious, able to be used when extra people come over, or as a step ladder to get into high cupboards. I have an old wooden stool but I vandalised it with decoupage back in the early 90s...poor old thing.
ReplyDeleteI do. A dear little wooden chair which came from the cosmetic department of Kirkcaldies Department store. Years ago they were getting rid of a few bits and pieces and I happened to be in the right place at the right time. I painted it white and covered its seat with a red/white linen teatowel and it is now in my little dressing room.
ReplyDeleteloving youe wallpaper and the chair :) le
ReplyDeleteAm I right? The skirting board has been painted at last?
ReplyDeletelove it! Also really liking your wallpaper. I'm in the middle of recovering and fixing up an old chair. A bigger job than I imagined so hopefully it turns out well!

The green paint bits on your chair are delightful! We rescued an old Mission Oak Arts & Crafts chair from the trash that a neighbor sat out. Free, and in great shape, just old, which is the best kind in my book! ~Lili
ReplyDeleteI love that chair, Amanda. I'm not impressed with high priced pieces. I love pieces like your chair. I like to hink of who owned them before.
ReplyDeleteWe have rescued loads of things and still have them. XXXX
I like to keep everything old - it can always be beautified! xx
